Club History
The club of origin, The U.S. Stamp Club, was founded in the early part of 1947, and originally met at the office of William Naff's Georgia Stamp & Coin Company. The primary purpose of the club was to bring members together on Saturday afternoons for a stamp auction at the stamp shop, obviating the need for a license or licensed auctioneer. The name of the club was changed to its current name to signify the inclusion of collectors of foreign stamps in the membership. In the 1950's the meeting place was changed to Dr. Fowler's office on 8th Street where meetings were to be held for the next twelve years. Other meeting places have included the NBG Building at Pershing Point, the Red Cross Building at 7th and Peachtree Street, the First United Methodist Church of Atlanta at 360 Peachtree Street, All Saints' Episcopal Church at 634 West Peachtree Street.

Atlanta Club Membership Details
Stamp collectors of all ages, interests, and expertise are cordially invited to join the Atlanta Stamp Collectors Club. The ASCC is the oldest philatelic organization in Georgia and has a membership of about 40 with interests ranging from general worldwide to classic United States to mainly single countries (e.g., Germany, New Zealand, Tonga, etc), and topical collectors (butterflies on stamps, dogs on stamps).
The club meets in downtown Atlanta to chat informally, hold a brief business meeting, and conduct an auction of members' philatelic materials. In addition, a presentation on a stamp collecting topic is given at least every other meeting. Regardless of collecting interests, participation in ASCC meetings is a pleasant and efficient way to increase knowledge of philately and to acquire new material at very low cost. The club auction is the highlight of each meeting and offers many items of interest at low prices. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire new material, and to dispose of duplicates. Membership is $12 a year (prorated), which includes a subscription to the club's monthly newsletter, Postmark Atlanta.

Congratulations are extended to club member Steve Swain for his October 3, 2020 literature competition awards at the Stamp Exhibition of Southern California (SESCAL) 2020.

Steve received a Large Vermeil for "Thrilling Adventures in Stamps Comics - A Look at the Golden Age of Stamp Collecting and Comic Books", originally published in the November 2017 issue of the American Philatelist. The article explores a young boy’s or girl’s joy and excitement of combining their passions for stamp collecting and comic books made available in the early-1950s issues of Thrilling
Adventures in Stamps Comics. Sheer innocence, educational nuggets and support for good old
fashion values were offered in each issue. The article’s intent is to provide an opportunity for such dual collectors of that era to relive a slice of their excitement and for contemporary, young collectors to have an awareness of how it was in the “golden age.”

Steve was also awarded a Large Vermeil for his "Fake Town Spanish-American War Postal History", originally published in the 3rd Quarter 2017 issue of La Posta, The Journal of American Postal
History. The article explores the intriguing story of Lytle, Georgia, a town near Camp Thomas, Georgia of only several shanties and shelters that quickly expanded and flourished due to hastily created
military training sites associated with the US involvement in the 1898 Spanish-American War.
The article’s intent is to examine the curious postal history of “Fake Town,” as the soldiers dubbed
Lytle, given that Lytle was specifically declared in a Post Office Department’s directive as not an
officially sanctioned military postal facility. Lytle covers, postmarks, cachets and letter contents are pre- sented to support the unique postal history of “Fake Town.”

British Blooms on Oxford Street
- Colin Clark
Circular hand stamps have been in use since the beginning of the British postal system, and they continue to be used today. Modern post office counters were equipped with Self Inking Datestamps (SIDs), which did not carry the time, in the mid-1980s. The SIDs are used for all counter paperwork, including pension books.
Trials for SIDs were conducted from 1985, and they became operational from 1987. These counter datestamps became generally used where computerization of counter work had taken place, which was followed by massive countrywide spread from 1993 to 1997. The SIDs are consistently 23 mm in diameter with a fancy “petal-style” edge. This flowering style was largely used from 1987.
The images below show examples of contemporary SIDs usage.
All of the SIDs image examples above are derived from the OXFORD ST SUNDERLAND Post Office, which was a town sub-office. The city of Sunderland is located in the North East of England. This post office was opened in 1892 and subsequently closed on January 19th 2015.
