Southeastern Stamp Expo 2015
SESE 2015 Celebrates College Football and its New Hall of Fame in Atlanta
The Organizing Committee of the Southeastern Stamp Expo has announced that the show theme for the 2015 show will be a celebration of College Football, prompted by the recent opening in August, 2014, of the exceptional College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
Officially named The College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-Fil-A Fan Experience, the Hall is a fabulous experience for any fan of college football, and features interactive displays and exhibits, and of course the rotunda where the names of all honorees are found. Its grand opening was on August 20, 2014.
The United States Postal Service has also honored College Football with many stamp issues. Even some famous Americans honored on stamps for their other exploits, played College Football. Examples are Gerald Ford and John Wayne.
The show will also feature a display of philatelic items that feature the game of American Football.
Be sure to visit the official website of the College Football Hall of Fame. We have posted their Youtube video on the grand opening to the right.

Mick Zais is a resident of South Carolina and currently serves on the three-member Board of Vice Presidents of the American Philatelic Society, and hence a voting member of the APS board. In 2014, Mick hosted an APS Town Hall to hear from
APS members and report on the latest happenings at APS headquarters in Bellefonte. Mick is reprising this session again
this year, and we are delighted to have him. Mick will speak at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 31 and wants to meet as many

steer the ship.
Southeastern Stamp Expo to Exhibit Upright Curtiss Jenny Sheet
In 2013, the United States Postal Service issued a souvenir sheet of six $2 stamps showing the famous Jenny invert of 1918. The USPS also issued 100 sheets of the souvenir sheet where the aircraft image was not inverted. These were distributed randomly at post offices across the country. According to Linn's Stamp News at the end of December, 20 of these sheets had been found, and several had been auctioned at very high prices. Linn's has stated the odds of uncovering a sheet are 19,000 to 1.
The Southeastern Stamp Expo will be exhibiting one of these sheets that is owned by a local collector. We do not know of another stamp show that has publicly exhibited one of these rare sheets.
The Upright Jenny sheet is America's modern rarity, and you can see one at the Southeastern Stamp Expo!

We have just learned that Vera Felts, Executive Director of the American Topical Association, will be visiting the Southeastern Stamp Show in 2015 and will host a Round Table session to discuss the ATA, and everything associated with collecting topics. Regardless of whether you are an ATA member or not, many of us collect stamps by topic, and this session will be a great opportunity to learn how the ATA can help. Vera's session will be on Saturday, January 31. We'll post the time and place to our Schedule of Events page once it's finalized.
The Organizing Committee of the Southeastern Stamp Expo is delighted to learn of this special visit by Vera, and are grateful to both her and the ATA for making this opportunity possible.

Charles J. O'Brien III Named Rowland Hill Honoree for 2015
The Board of Directors of the Southeast Federation of Stamp Clubs are proud to announce the selection of Charles J. O'Brien III as the 2015 recipient of the Rowland Hill Award. The Rowland Hill Award was created in 2005 to honor those who have made significant lifetime contributions to philately, particularly in the Southeastern United States. An honoree is selected annually by a selection committee nominated by the SEFSC Board.
Charles is one of the most celebrated exhibitors of First Day Cover material in the nation. He has won several grand and reserve grand awards at the national level for multiple exhibits. He is also the current President of the Southeast Federation of Stamp Clubs, a role he accepted in 2010, and has since led a revitalization effort of the Southeastern Stamp Expo to what it is today. Charles has also been a generous donor to multiple philatelic organizations.
In private life, Charles is a gifted architect, and has served as the President of Pieper O'Brien Herr for some 27 years. Charles has led this firm to national recognition, including a recent assessment by Architectural Record magazine as one of the top 300 Architecture practices in the nation. Pieper O'Brien Herr was selected by the American Philatelic Society to design the interior upgrades to the American Philatelic Research Library in the American Philatelic Center in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. Charles and wife Dona have a son and a daughter, both of whom have followed their father's lead and hold careers in the Architectural sector.

2015 Show History
The Southeastern Stamp Expo 2015 was a smash hit! Our attendance grew from the year before, and we had a number of practically unique features that simply could not be seen at other shows.
The star of the show had to be the appearance of the right-side-up Jenny sheet. This rarity (only one of 100 printed by the USPS with only 30 or so discovered) showed up in a local collector's mailbox, and he made it available to the show. As a result, the Southeastern Stamp Expo exhibited this rare piece at a national show for the first time ever, and the media, including Linn's Stamp News, were all over it.
The exhibits were superb, with the Grand Award going to David Pitts for Bermuda Postal History: From Colonization to the UPU. Robert Benninghoff took home the Reserve Grand for Irish Definitive Coil Stamps 1922-1940. He also took the One Frame Grand for The Collection of Postage Due Fees in Ireland 1914-1926.
Also making an appearance was a one frame exhibit by Randy Neil titled OH MY! WEIRD COVERS. Randy wrote an article about this exhibit in the American Exhibitor, and showed it at the SESE for the first time. Check out the full palmares to see who won which awards.
We're grateful to our jury, which was led by Tom Mazza leading a panel of John Allen, Roland Cipolla, Hal Vogel, and Ross Towle. Huntsville's own Raymond Pietruszka conducted his first apprenticeship and we were honored to have him.
The Rowland Hill Award for lifetime service to philately in the Southeastern US was presented to current SEFSC President, Charles O'Brien III. You can read Charles' bio in the Show Program.
The show theme was a celebration of the opening of the new College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Ed Jackson prepared a one frame display on Football on US Stamps and artist Chris Lazaroff prepared a wonderful show cover featuring a college fooball cachet.
On Friday morning, the United States Postal Service honored the Expo with a First Day of Issue ceremony for the $2 Patriot Waves of Color stamp. Attendees could get their program signed by the presiding dignitaries and then purchase freshly postmarked first day covers from two participating cachetmakers, Chris Lazaroff and Kendal Bevil. Note that Kendal has only recently started attending shows again, and made the SESE his first stop. His display of hand-painted first day covers in the lobby was spectacular, and Kendal even gave a presentation on his life as an artist. Linn's Stamp News later did an article on Kendal in November that further discusses his career and talents.
Several philatelic societies also graced us with their presence. The American First Day Cover Society had a regional meeting, with several exhibitors bringing exhibits. Members also enjoyed the Saturday Cachetmakers Bourse, with four cachetmakers participating. ESPER was here in strength as well. They too held a regional meeting, with two well received presentations. John Allen spoke on "Hidden History in Black America", and Educator and Civil War Re-enactor Donald West spoke on "African Americans and the Civil War." Members also had a reception in their honor in the show's hospitality suite. And the American Topical Association joined us too. ATA Executive Director Vera Felts joined us and hosted a round table symposium for ATA members and other topicalists. Then they enjoyed a night out on Friday night at a local restaurant. And we cannot forget the Georgia Postal History Society, who once again held their annual meeting, and listened to Steve Swain present on "Bittersweet Family Postal History."
Lastly, we received some nice media coverage on the show. Joshua Sharpe of the Gwinnett Daily Post did a great story on the Expo and the USPS First Day of Issue Ceremony. And Randy Neil wrote a column for the American Stamp Dealer & Collector complimenting the show, our venue, and the organizing committee.
