Southeastern Stamp Expo 2014
The Southeastern Stamp Expo 2014 was an overwhelming success. It was held for the second year at the Hilton Atlanta Northeast on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Peachtree Corners, Georgia, the weekend of January 31st to February 2nd. Our show theme was a tribute to Georgia native Ray Charles, and we featured a commemorative cover with the USPS Ray Charles stamp that was issued in the fall of 2013. The show also featured a USPS Stamp Dedication Ceremony on the Saturday morning.
Despite difficult weather in the days preceding the show, our exhibitors and our judges made it through. Alan Warren chaired our jury which included Roger Quinby, Tom Myers, and Ken Trettin. We were disappointed that Stephen Suffet got snowed in up in New York and could not join us. Despite being down a judge, this jury got the job done. Our Grand Award winner was Albert Briggs for Domestic Rates and Uses of the Presidential Series. Charles O'Brien III won the Reserve Grand for The Eagle has Landed! and the One Frame Grand went to James Cate for General Banks Division. See the Palmares for the full list of awards.
Other highlights included a visit from Chris Calle, a renowned artist and designer of many United States commemorative stamps. Chris gave a presentation on his career. And Mick Zais, APS board member, and Tara Murray, Director of the American Philatelic Research Library, co-hosted an APS Town Hall for APS members.
