Show Covers from the 2021 Southeastern Stamp Expo
Although the 2021 Southeastern Stamp Expo had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the show organizers decided to celebrate a great theme for the show by producing commemorative covers.
In 2021, our plan was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Satchel Paige's induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Paige was born in Mobile, Alabama, and would play professional baseball in the Negro Leagues in Chattanooga, Birmingham, Memphis, and many other cities. He would not enter the Major Leagues until 1948, the year after Jackie Robinson's historic barrier-breaking entry into the Majors in 1947.
Paige was a dominating pitcher, but since his most prolific work was done in the Negro Leagues and not the Majors, the National Baseball Hall of Fame effectively discriminated against him because the Baseball Writers Association could not consider his non-Major League achievements. As a result, the great African American baseball players who were barred from the Majors until 1947 had to suffer another injustice. This was finally corrected in 1971, when a special committee was formed to assess Negro Leagues players and recommend selections to the Hall. Paige was the first such player selected. It was announced on February 9, 1971, and the induction ceremony was held on August 9, 1971.
The Southeastern Stamp Expo offers commemorative covers with a special postmark of February 9, 2021, fifty years to the day after the announcement, serviced at the Cooperstown, New York post office. Cooperstown is the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
The cachet was designed by Pete McClure.
