Stamp Explorers - Where Children Build their Stamp Collections

Your Child and Stamp Collecting

Picture
They can go together, and for many they do!

Stamp Collecting is educational.  Period.  Stamps depict fascinating elements of history, geography and culture.  Exotic places that we'll never visit can be brought to us through their stamps.

How educational?  Let's examine some opinions on this subject found on the Internet.

The site Education.com addresses the value of childhood stamp collecting here.

And here's a great article by Melissa Rayworth of the Associated Press on the Subject.

And here's another great resource to look at.

All of these articles stress a few key benefits, namely:
  1. Your child will become a whiz at history and geography. Don't be surprised if he or she corrects you when you didn't know that Upper Volta changed its name to Burkina Faso.  Your child will learn of new countries all around the world, and even ones that don't exist any more.  And history?  Don't be surprised if he or she starts referencing wars of which you have never even heard.
  2. It's Cheap.  There are numerous outlets where your child can get packets of free stamps.
  3. It brings families together.  Rather than watch your child blast unfortunates on the latest video game purchase, you can mentor your child while looking through a pile of stamps together.
  4. It puts your child in touch with his/her roots.  Whether you are first, second or nth generation American, you probably came from somewhere.  And you may be very proud of that heritage.  Your child should be too.  Having your child collect the stamps of the country that nurtured our direct ancestors is a great way to connect your child to the wonderful heritage he or she brings to this country of immigrants.

I hope we have made the case that Stamp Collecting is fun.  And educational.  And thanks to generous adults with some stamps to spare, it's also inexpensive for children.

Our Stamp Explorers youth area is designed to meet the needs of young collectors adding to their stamp collections, or starting from scratch.  The area is staffed by volunteers who have worked with youngsters in the past and it includes structured activities and thousands of free stamps from which to choose.  This year, our youth area will be in the lobby outside the main ballroom.  As a result, parents and children who intend to only make use of our youth area do not have to pay the $5 fee to enter the ballroom where the dealers and exhibits are located.

Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or any other adult mentor is invited to look through the stamps with your child, however, these stamps were donated specifically for youth stamp collecting activities and are not available to the adult public.

If your child has any specific interest (like a country or topic), please email us at sestampexpo@gmail.com and advise us of what your child's interest is, and we will do our best to source that material and make sure it's available for your child's visit.

Donations of stamps or other philatelic material are always gratefully received, and may even be eligible for a tax deduction.  Please write us at sestampexpo@gmail.com to advise us if you have material you can donate.
