Southeastern Stamp Expo 2017 Announces Show Theme
"A Celebration of Baseball"
The theme for the 2017 Southeastern Stamp Expo will be "a celebration of
baseball," in conjunction with the opening of the Atlanta Braves new home,
SunTrust Park, in Marietta, Georgia. The Atlanta Braves will open their 2017
season in April in the new stadium, currently under construction. To celebrate this
great milestone for Greater Atlanta and "Braves Nation," the SESE will celebrate
and explore the philatelic aspects of America's Pastime.
SESE 2017 to Host USPS First Day of Issue for New Flag Stamp
The Planning Committee of the Southeastern Stamp Expo 2017 announces that the United States Postal Service will conduct a First Day of Issue Ceremony at the Southeastern Stamp Expo on January 27, 2017 at 11 am, for the new Flag stamp definitive. The ceremony will be conducted in the Medlock Auditorium of the Hilton Atlanta Northeast, 5993 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Norcross, GA, 30092, which is the venue for the Southeastern Stamp Expo.
Speaking at the Ceremony will be Jeff Williamson, Chief Human Resources Officer of the USPS, and Mick Zais, President of the American Philatelic Society. Following the First Day ceremony will be a signing ceremony where attendees can have their commemorative programs signed by all dignitaries on the program. Expo organizers are also working on a plan where First Day Covers with the new stamp will be available for sale by several of the cachet-making artists attending the show immediately following the ceremony.
The stamp, sold in booklets of 10 and 20 and coils, features a detail from a photograph of the billowing Stars and Stripes. Terrence W. McCaffrey was the art director of the project and Greg Breeding of Charlottesville, VA, designed the stamp with an existing photograph of the flag taken by Tom Grill of New York.

The Southeastern Stamp Expo is delighted to be honored with this event, and trusts that it will be a rewarding experience for many stamp collectors in the Greater Atlanta Area. We are grateful to all USPS staff who have worked diligently on this event, with significant more work to come to bring this event to fruition.

Southeastern Stamp Expo 2017 Raffle Item
For 2017, the Southeastern Stamp Expo has acquired a Very Fine Penny Black (Great Britain Scott #1) that will be used as our
raffle item for the show. Tickets are $1 each, however, all paid admissions will be accompanied by a free raffle ticket, meaning
all paying attendees will automatically get a chance to win the Penny Black.
The stamp itself is a very fine copy, with four full margins, and a black Maltese Cross cancel almost completely contained within the margins. It is plate number four.
SESE 2017 to Feature Book Signing with Edward Bergen
The Southeastern Stamp Expo is pleased to announce that author Edward Bergen will be available for a book signing on Friday, January 27, after the conclusion of the USPS First Day of Issue Ceremony. Titled Walt Disney's First Superstar: Mickey Mouse, the book is an exploration of the fabulous philatelic and other collectibles of Edward Bergen, many of which are featured in his Gold winning exhibit of the same name. The Exhibit will be available for viewing inside the Hunnicutt Ballroom in frames 13 to 17. Known as a "Display Exhibit," Edward's exhibit features both philatelic and non-philatelic elements that tell a cohesive story about the animated character.
The book signing will take place in the lobby outside the Medlock Auditorium at approximately 11:30 am. Mr. Bergen will be available to sign copies of his book to 1 pm. He will also be giving a presentation on the subject of Display Exhibiting at 4 pm on Friday in the Cobb Room, where he will draw upon elements of his exhibit to illustrate the finer details of Display Exhibiting. The Southeastern Stamp Expo is grateful to Mr. Bergen for all his support of the Expo.

We are delighted to announce that Mick Zais, President of the American Philatelic Society, will be attending the Southeastern Stamp Expo in January. Mick will host an APS Town Hall meeting on Saturday afternoon. He will also be attending the Awards Banquet on Saturday evening as a guest of the show. We are honored to have Mick come by our show and engage with local APS members and all of our attendees.

The Education Department of the American Philatelic Society has announced that they will conduct an
"On-the-Road" course at the Southeastern Stamp Expo on Thursday, January 26, 2017. Entitled Mastering
Postal History: How to Read and Interpret a Cover, this one day course will be taught by enthusiastic philatelist
nd postal historian Gary Wayne Loew. Mr. Loew is the author of the forthcoming book Mastering Postal History.
e is an expert on the stamps and postal history of Gambia, and has written articles for The Collectors Club Philatelist, Cameo, The Airpost Journal, Flagstaff, and The Philatelic Exhibitor.
The course syllabus and Mr. Loew's biography can be found in the Course Flyer published by the APS. The SESE
has extended the room block to include the night of Wednesday, January 25 for those wishing to travel to the course
from outside Atlanta. The course is priced at an economical $65 (lunch is excluded) for APS members. Registration

SESE 2017 to Host Presentation on the Postmark Museum
The Southeastern Stamp Expo is pleased to announce that Mr. Gary Hendren will present "A Tour of the Postmark Collectors Club Museum" on Saturday, January 28th, at noon. Mr. Hendren is the curator of the Margie Pfund Memorial Postmark Museum and Research Library located in Bellevue, Ohio. This presentation will be of great interest to all Postal History collectors, who will learn about the offerings of the museum and how it can aid in philatelic research. Roger P. Quinby Named Rowland Hill Award Honoree for 2017
The Board of Directors of the Southeast Federation of Stamp Clubs are proud to announce the selection of Roger P. Quinby, FRPSL, as the 2017 recipient of the Rowland Hill Award. The Rowland Hill Award was created in 2005 to honor those who have made significant lifetime contributions to philately, particularly in the Southeastern United States. An honoree is selected annually by a selection committee nominated by the SEFSC Board.
Roger is a skilled philatelist, particularly among the stamps and postal history of Finland. He is an author of many articles on Finnish philately, and served as President of the Scandinavian Collectors Club. Roger is an accredited APS philatelic and literature judge. He as exhibited many times, including the international level, where he has earned Gold medals. Due to his lifetime work, Roger was elected a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society London in 2014.
At the local level, Roger is a contributor to local stamp clubs and stamp shows. He has both exhibited and judged numerous times at the Southeastern Stamp Expo. He is a member of the Cobb County Stamp Club in Georgia, and served two terms as its secretary.
Roger is a retired attorney, who held senior posts in the New York state government. He and wife Sue have three children and six grandchildren. Roger will receive his award on January 28th, 2017, at the Awards Banquet of the Southeastern Stamp Expo. For more information, see the Press Release.

We are pleased to announce that Vera Felts, Executive Director of the American Topical Association, will be attending the Southeastern Stamp Expo at the end of January. Vera will staff a hospitality table in the lobby outside the bourse area, and hopes to meet all ATA members. If you collect a topic, you will want to speak to Vera to understand the services that the ATA provides. The Expo's planning committee is delighted to welcome back Vera to another show.

The Organizing Committee of the Southeastern Stamp Expo is pleased to announce that Dr. Warachal E. Faison will give a presentation titled "Who is Dorothy Height?" at the Expo on Saturday, January 28th at 1:00 pm. The presentation will be a component of the Regional Meeting of the Ebony Society for Philatelic Events and Reflections (ESPER) who are holding a formal gathering at the Expo. Dorothy Height (1912-2010) was an iconic Civil Rights leader who is the subject of the latest Black Heritage commemorative stamp issued by the United States Postal Service. Traditionally, the USPS issues a Black Heritage stamp each year in the February timeframe to coincide with Black History Month, which is celebrated in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The Expo is grateful to Dr. Faison for giving this lecture.
